• Dr Katalin Barta, Chair of the Green Chemistry Division of the European Chemical Society (EuChemS), known for her pioneering work on sustainable catalytic processes and biomass conversion.

During these seasons, the proliferation of mosquitoes and other insects can become quite a nuisance. For that reason, active ingredients in certain essential oils can become our allies in combating them. These oils interfere with the sensory systems of insects, keeping them at bay without causing adverse effects on the environment.

LIST OF NATURAL ESSENTIAL OILS WITH REPELLENT EFFECTS

Among the natural essential oils attributed with insect-repellent properties, we can find:

• Tea Tree: Its essential oil has aromatic and camphoraceous notes. Moreover, multiple studies attribute it with insect-repellent properties, effective against various species of flies[1] and mosquitoes[2].
• Clove: With an intense and warm aroma, it contains a high amount of eugenol. A 2005 study asserts that its undiluted essential oil can repel mosquitoes of three different species for up to 4 hours [3]. In addition to its effectiveness as a repellent, clove oil also has anaesthetic and antimicrobial properties.
• Citronella: With a citrusy and lemony scent, varying slightly depending on the specific variety from which the oil is extracted, it is very popular in many products designed to repel mosquitoes and other insects [4][5]. Citronella is widely used in candles, sprays, and lotions, providing a natural barrier against flying insects.
• Eucalyptus: Various studies have shown that the essential oil of eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus) not only has balsamic and cineolic olfactory notes with slight sweet undertones but also possesses mosquito-repellent properties [6][7]. This oil is not only effective as a repellent but also has decongestant and anti-inflammatory properties.
• Geranium: With pleasant olfactory accords reminiscent of floral rose notes, this essential oil has been shown in various studies to have repellent activity against ticks [8], flies [9], and mosquitoes [10].
• Lavender: Different studies suggest that the essential oil of this popular aromatic plant in fragrance making can repel ticks [11] and mosquitoes [12], making it an attractive eco-friendly Besides its repellent properties, lavender is known for its ability to reduce stress and promote sleep, offering a dual benefit in daily use.
• Peppermint: The essential oil of peppermint is well-known for its fresh and mentholated olfactory notes. Studies indicate it has insect-repellent properties [13]. Its main component, menthol, not only repels flies and mosquitoes but also provides a very pleasant cooling sensation in hot climates.

According to a report published by the market research company NielsenIQ, 73% of Spanish consumers acknowledge giving more importance to sustainability today than just two years ago. Another figure collected indicates that 79% of consumers globally will tend to buy in spaces that offer a greater variety of sustainable products.

For this reason, it is not surprising in the current scenario that sustainability and ecological awareness are pillars in the lifestyle of younger consumers, who are willing to pay a higher price for quality sustainable products.

This positive trend of global reach and of enormous force at present makes more and more industries join in the development of articles that respect the environment, thus promoting social and economic progress without damaging natural ecosystems.

The perfumery sector places more and more emphasis on ecological packaging, using reusable containers made from recycled material. An example of this could be Guerlain’s Aqua Allegoria collection, packaged in refillable bottles made from 15% recycled glass, the production of which generates less than half the carbon of its non-refillable counterpart.

At the national level, Stanpa and Ecovidrio have presented an ecodesign guide earlier this month that offers recommendations to reduce the weight of the bottles and avoid elements that make recycling them difficult.

Sectors such as cosmetics and home care are also increasingly committed to making 100% sustainable products, embracing a new form of consumption that transcends fashion and is here to stay.

What is the sustainable formulation of fragrances?

As a result of the aforementioned trend, a factor that is increasingly taken into account by the sectors in which fragrances and aromas are applied is that these have been developed through a sustainable formulation of fragrances.

With the sustainable formulation of fragrances, the aim is to give greater importance to ecological and social aspects when preparing aromatic essences, emphasizing that they have been manufactured minimizing carbon emissions, using 100% renewable electricity and taking other considerations (social, ecological and ethical) into account.

• Promoting the creation of aromatic compounds made from essential oils, oleoresins and other 100% natural raw materials.

The subject chosen by the United Nations for this year is Ecosystem Restoration, which under the slogan “Reimagine. Recreate. Restore”, intends to encourage the world population to develop ecological actions supporting the preservation and improvement of the many ecosystems that have been damaged by human action throughout the years.

Dealing with this issue is currently fundamental to ensure the maintenance of biodiversity on Earth, since only through measures aimed at protecting the environment will we be able to improve our present and help build a hopeful future for next generations.

At Destilerías Muñoz Gálvez we are aware of the importance of carrying out actions that help preserve our ecosystems, that is why we have developed several projects aimed at minimising our environmental impact as we increase the efficiency of our processes.

We have facilities equipped with photovoltaic solar panels, which, along with our commitment to use only energy from 100% renewable sources, make us a company with a neutral carbon footprint.

Moreover, thanks to the effort of our R&D&i Department, we have been able to boost our production while drastically reducing our water footprint. The Moblastop Project has a total budget of 1.17 million euros and will develop a novel method for creating an active greenhouse cover against pests, which will make it possible to avoid the difficulty of incorporating natural repellent polymers in a technically and economically viable way, using bentonites and taking advantage of the properties of these compounds as substance absorbers.

Plants have been shown to have defence mechanisms against pests through substances that they produce themselves which are detected by vector insects due to their volatility. These natural repellents can be incorporated into the polymer so that they are released by it progressively throughout the shelf life of the greenhouse cover.

The MoBlaStop Project designs a consortium made up of three companies ranging from obtaining bentonites of natural origin for their functionalization, extraction, and modification of natural insect repellent substances, to the transformation of plastics through the addition of active substances.

The companies participating in the project are:

Solplast S.A., manufacturer of greenhouse covers,

Destilerías Muñoz Gálvez, S.A., manufacturer of chemical-aromatic substances,

and Clariant Ibérica Producción, S.A., as a company producing natural bentonites.

Likewise, it is being developed in conjunction with the CETEC Technology Centre and the Cajamar-Las Palmerillas Experimental Station:

CETEC, a specialist in plastics in the different facets of its additivation, transformation and analysis, and with wide experience in the participation and management of consortium projects.

Cajamar-Las Palmerillas Experimental Station, a reference technological centre in intensive Mediterranean agriculture, with long experience in crop protection, pests, and post-harvest diseases, and application of molecular techniques for the detection and identification of pathogens and pests.

In this way, a total of 147,955 W of installed peak photovoltaic power is already available in our factory in Murcia, therefore we hope to generate more than 200,000 KWh per year, which represents approximately 20% of the electrical energy that we consume.

This last action, with a nominal capacity for the generation of a 105 KW power, is expected to generate around 170,000 KWh (approx. 14.6 toe/year), which represents 15% of the annual consumption of our plant. In addition to a reduction in the production of greenhouse gases (GHG) estimated at about 59.31 tons of CO2 equivalent.

The facilities have been fully operational since December 2018, with a total installation cost of € 184,550, of which € 55,365 are object of a subsidy granted by the European Union.
