While most commonly associated with gastronomy, black pepper has earned a prestigious place in modern perfumery. Its essential oil is a versatile ingredient highly valued by perfumers worldwide, used to create fragrances for a wide variety of applications, from luxury perfumes to cosmetic products.

This oil is typically obtained through steam distillation of the dried berries of the climbing plant Piper nigrum, which is native to Southeast Asia. It has a spicy olfactory profile rich in warm nuances, adding depth and sophistication to the compositions it is incorporated into.

CHEMICAL COMPOSITION OF BLACK PEPPER ESSENTIAL OIL

The aromatic richness of this oil comes from a complex mixture of molecules, each contributing distinct olfactory characteristics. Some of the key compounds include:

β-Caryophyllene: Present in large quantities, this compound contributes to the pepper’s spicy flavour. Its scent is reminiscent of clove.

Delta-3-Carene: Known for its sweet, penetrating and terpene-like smell.

Limonene: While more commonly associated with orange essential oil, limonene adds a citrus sparkle that recalls the fresh, vibrant notes of this fruit.

Beta-pinene and Alpha-pinene: These compounds provide coniferous notes with a camphor-like touch, balancing black pepper’s spiciness with a balsamic freshness.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF BLACK PEPPER

The use of black pepper dates back thousands of years. Written records from at least 3,000 years ago describe its uses beyond flavouring, mentioning it as a key component in Ayurvedic medicine in India.

It is also well-documented that ancient civilizations such as the Egyptians used this spice in mixtures for religious ceremonies and in the process of mummification.

Black pepper was so valuable in ancient times that it was often referred to as “black gold” and was used as currency by Greek and Roman merchants.

Its culinary prominence peaked during the Middle Ages, with numerous historical references to its widespread use in various dishes.

USES AND PROPERTIES OF BLACK PEPPER ESSENTIAL OIL

In addition to its role in crafting fragrances and flavouring food, black pepper essential oil has properties that make it suitable for use in a wide range of products. Some of these include:

Multiple studies attribute it with antioxidant and antimicrobial properties [1].

Hepatoprotective potential [2]: Preliminary research suggests that compounds in black pepper oil may have protective effects on the liver, which could lead to its use in therapeutic treatments.

It appears to offer properties that makes it a promising therapeutic candidate for wound care and various metabolic diseases, among other applications [3].

That time of the year when the sun shines brightly has arrived and the intoxicating coastal breezes bring marine aromas with them that fill our lungs with vitality and well-being.

When it comes to fragrances, during the summer we tend to use scents that feel light, fresh and clean. These aromas that fit so well in summer environments usually have olfactory notes collected within the following families:

Citrus olfactory family: Bergamot, lemon, yuzu, lime and neroli are popular in this season. They are used in fragrances with floral bodies to add a certain lightness to the whole and with aromatic plants, such as spearmint, in order to obtain fresh and clean fragrances.

Floral olfactory family: In this group, aquatic flowers such as water lilies and sweet floral chords, as well as white flowers such as jasmine and gardenia stand out in summer. Their smell fits perfectly with the warmest temperatures of summer and they are capable of transporting us to beautiful gardens with just one spray.

Marine olfactory family: Particularly noteworthy are the aquatic chords, suitable for synthetic molecules such as Calone, which provides notes reminiscent of sea breezes, and natural raw materials such as the absolute extracted from the Fucus Vesiculus algae.

Fruity olfactory family: Notes of tropical fruits such as coconut and pineapple triumph in this season, evoking exotic landscapes with their aroma and providing a certain sweet and fruity combination that works very well when it comes to complementing warm days and a state of happier and more relaxed mood.

Getting to know the new olfactory trends of this summer

Although this year homage is once again paid to the most significant qualities of the season through the use of chords such as those mentioned above and the use of raw materials rich in cineole, the trends point towards the recognition of other characteristics of the summer season that tend to be overlooked more often.

The use of gourmand notes such as vanilla, normally used in more winter fragrances, is being seen more and more in the background of fresh and summer scents, reminding us of ice creams of this and other flavors. The same growing trend is being observed in fragrances based on exotic fruit sorbets such as mango, which are intermingled with herbal accords such as mint to enhance the overall freshness.

This season the popularity of the pitahaya or dragon fruit olfactory notes has also skyrocketed, which has won the position of the smell of the year thanks to its floral, sweet and intoxicating aroma.

At DMG we develop fragrances with summer chords for all kinds of products.

We have a team of professionals with extensive experience in the development of essences that are individually adapted to the needs of each project and client, thus making these light, fresh and carefree aromas the protagonists of innumerable compositions.

The growing popularity of eco-friendly products is undoubtedly one of the factors that has most transformed the global market in recent years.

According to a report published by the market research company NielsenIQ, 73% of Spanish consumers acknowledge giving more importance to sustainability today than just two years ago. Another figure collected indicates that 79% of consumers globally will tend to buy in spaces that offer a greater variety of sustainable products.

For this reason, it is not surprising in the current scenario that sustainability and ecological awareness are pillars in the lifestyle of younger consumers, who are willing to pay a higher price for quality sustainable products.

This positive trend of global reach and of enormous force at present makes more and more industries join in the development of articles that respect the environment, thus promoting social and economic progress without damaging natural ecosystems.

The perfumery sector places more and more emphasis on ecological packaging, using reusable containers made from recycled material. An example of this could be Guerlain’s Aqua Allegoria collection, packaged in refillable bottles made from 15% recycled glass, the production of which generates less than half the carbon of its non-refillable counterpart.

At the national level, Stanpa and Ecovidrio have presented an ecodesign guide earlier this month that offers recommendations to reduce the weight of the bottles and avoid elements that make recycling them difficult.

Sectors such as cosmetics and home care are also increasingly committed to making 100% sustainable products, embracing a new form of consumption that transcends fashion and is here to stay.

What is the sustainable formulation of fragrances?

As a result of the aforementioned trend, a factor that is increasingly taken into account by the sectors in which fragrances and aromas are applied is that these have been developed through a sustainable formulation of fragrances.

With the sustainable formulation of fragrances, the aim is to give greater importance to ecological and social aspects when preparing aromatic essences, emphasizing that they have been manufactured minimizing carbon emissions, using 100% renewable electricity and taking other considerations (social, ecological and ethical) into account.

At DMG, some of the measures that have been adopted to contribute to the conservation of our environment, prevent pollution and minimize negative environmental impacts are:

Promoting research and development of technologies, methods and processes that contribute to the optimization of resources and raw materials within our business activity.

Betting on the circular economy of processes, developing R+D+i projects that have made innovation possible in production processes, as well as environmental improvements focused on the decontamination and reuse of water with a high organic load.

Using our own solar panels and an external supply of electrical energy, certified as coming from 100% renewable sources.

Manufacturing aromatic compositions, respecting the sustainable production and consumption policies of certifications such as Ecolabel, Ecocert or Blue Angel, thus guaranteeing compliance with national and international ecological standards.

Promoting the creation of aromatic compounds made from essential oils, oleoresins and other 100% natural raw materials.

Such commitments have been synergistically integrated into our manufacturing processes, resulting in increased production, while significantly reducing the company’s carbon and water footprint.

If you want your product to have a sustainably produced fragrance that is respectful of both the end user and the environment, without sacrificing the performance and efficacy to which they are accustomed, do not hesitate to contact us.

The kitchen is one of the most relevant spaces in our homes to the extent of being considered by many to be the heart of our home. As a space intended for the handling and preparation of food, the mixture of scents that happens almost daily in a kitchen can rapidly go from being pleasant to being burdensome or even displeasing.

The smell coming from the ingredients of a homemade lasagne for instance can whet our appetite while we prepare this recipe for dinner, but the feeling that this very smell would awaken in us when having breakfast the next morning would quite probably be far different.

An undesired odour can ruin the ambience of your kitchen by itself. In order to avoid this, proper ventilation and the use of air fresheners capable of neutralising persisting smells and purifying air come into play.

In this article, you will find the keys to choose the perfect air freshener for your kitchen.

HOW TO CHOOSE AN AIR FRESHENER FOR YOUR KITCHEN

When choosing an air freshener for our kitchen, it is important to take into account not only its fragrance, but also its format.

Every single format available on the market has unique features that are worth evaluating. Sprays, for instance, are a quick way to perfume our kitchen. They are the perfect ally to instantly perfume our home when we someone pays a casual visit to us. Scented candles, on the other hand, are the most suitable option for creating an intimate and cosy atmosphere, apart from the possibility of acquiring candles which are specifically designed to neutralize odours.

Although deciding between one fragrance or another to perfume our home is something personal that depends mainly on the taste and needs of each one, there are certain key points that are worth bearing in mind when choosing an essence for our kitchen.

One of these key points is undoubtedly to choose a fragrance with deodorising properties which neutralise the odour particles of food instead of masking them. It is also important that the chosen fragrance does not compete or merge with the aroma and flavours of food.

Especially popular for kitchens are air fresheners with olfactory notes from plants like mint and lavender and fragrances which provide a citrus touch with prevailing notes such as those from lemon and bergamot, which are capable of providing a fresh and clean aroma to the room, wiping other unwanted smells out.

At Destilerías Muñoz Gálvez, we have wide expertise designing fragrances for all kind of air fresheners in accordance with the recommendations of IFRA (International Fragrance Association).

We adapt our compositions to every project and format as we always develop them to exceed the expectations of our customers. If you are seeking for help to find the ideal fragrance for your air freshener, do not hesitate to contact us by any of the means available at our contact page.
